Archaeologists/Public History ppl on the flist?

Yeah, I know I haven't been around a lot, and all that I have been around to do is whine. Anyway, I'm trying to update on actual life events:

First off, as of yesterday, I'll be working out on a WWII sub that's been turned into a museum exhibit doing everything from archiving to conservation. I haven't actually gotten to even go see it yet (I'm going in on Thursday) but I'm really excited about this.

Next up, I decided to do the gradschool applying dance once again this year. Which leads me to my request. I'm looking for a good introduction to public history and how public history and archaeology work together. Even just the text you used in your Intro to Public History class would be good.

And lastly, I'm all signed up to go play with torches again, this time making copper enameled beads. I think I enjoy art most when it involves fire.

Amazing. Simply Amazing. Congratulations Mr. Obama.

I am so happy.

My favorite tv people are all crying: Rachel Maddow, Jon Stewart, Keith Olbermann...

My favorite real life people are all crying too.

Natural Gas?

My television viewing (Keith-Rachel-Anderson-Jon-Stephen) is being swamped by natural gas ads. Can any one give me the scoop/point me in the direction of information about natural gas as a gasoline replacement? My tv seems to think it's the best idea EVER and the we need to do it NOW. I, however, am skeptical about this and yet my googlefu is failing me.

Not Dead. Yay!

This is a cool little documentary on what will probably be the last time the Bible is printed via letterpress. It's not all low tech, they hocked their monotype up to a Mac.

I've been a Unitarian Universalist since I was nineteen. I was married by a UU minister, I plan on raising my children in a UU church, and in the end, I plan to be buried as a UU. TVUUC is the church justnukeit attended when he lived in Knoxville. It's the church we would have attended if he'd picked UT over UW (they were the only two schools he applied to). It is just unconceivable.

I can has internets! (lolcat is a completely legitimate dialect of English.... shut up :P ) Anyway, yes, I'm back in America, moved into the new house in Pittsburgh and our blindingly fast internet is all hooked up finally. I haven't even looked at my email yet, but I'll try and get through it all today and tomorrow, depending.

Besides that, musingsfromhere's wedding was excellent, the plane travel slight crazy, moving halfway across the country and then leaving the country the next day really crazy and the boxes still very much unpacked.

Moving.... the begining of the crazyness.

OMG. Movers will be at my house on Monday July 7th, yes that's thirteen days from now. Please watch as I hyperventilate. We thought we had until mid-August, so I'm less prepared than I could be. I still had things on my to do list, like the Steam Museum in Manitowoc that I wanted to do and I had to cancel my Lake Michigan wreck dive since I won't be here (pouts).

In this time I also have my Scuba Instructor test (this weekend) and a house hunting trip (right after the scuba exam) and musingsfromhere's wedding (which I still don't know how I'm getting to or where I'm staying, because until today I didn't know what city I needed to fly out of).

(PS: nwhepcat I'm free and in town from the 3rd to the 6th if you aren't going anywhere for the 4th and wanted to maybe meet up.)

Del.icio.us is like chocolate for my brain.

I renaming del.icio.us tags on one screen and coding thedailyreport in the other, because I'm supposed to be cleaning as people are coming to see the apartment at six.

Retagging at del.icio.us has brought to light a new pet peeve. Why can't characters be named something new and exciting? I mean, take Jack. I had a "Jack" tag and since I wasn't paying attention, such various fictional people as Jack O'Niell, Jack Harkness, and Jack Vasser were sharing a tag. Sam Carter has to be tagged with both a first and last name, so she doesn't get mixed up with either Jack Carter or Sam Winchester. Let not even talk about the Dans, Dannys, Danis, Daniels and Danielles.

Okay, so yes, I've become a little obsessed with my del.icio.us. It appeals to the side of my brain the loves to categorize things. Enough so I was sitting here thinking, wow, I wish I could tag my books too. It would be even better than alphabetizing them!

Dead diver books

This week has been hella crazy. I really do mean to talk more about Wiscon, but first, a question. Is there any other sport that at least 50% of the books written about it are about people who died doing it?

See, there is this entire genre, which I'll be calling 'Dead Diver Books' that focus on/discuss heavily people who died while Scuba diving. When my books aren't all packed up my 'dead diver' books sit next to my scuba manuals. I don't even own any other kind of scuba diving book.

Most of these books are about technical diver who either died on wrecks or in caves, almost always at great depth. The only other sport I think might have the same thing would be mountain climbing (Yes, I'm all signed up to go to the climbing gym and try it out next week. Shadow Units is a bad influence.)

On Friday of Wiscon, I worked in the morning and only just got there before the Gathering started, but it happened to be excellent timing as I was sitting in the lobby when nwhepcat and gwynnega walked into the hotel. I hooked up with them pretty immediately and hung out for the rest of the con.

The coolest thing I did at the Gathering this year was make my own curry powder (this was the one thing justnukeit saw on the schedule and actually wanted to do, so I brought some home to him.) We also went by the bpal sniffing table and chatted with cynthia1960. Then we headed out to the "It's Not about Identity" panel.

One of the panelists, Andrea Hairston, demonstrated polyrhythmic drumming while speaking and it was on e of the niftiest things I saw all con. They also talked about things like bracketing and identity politics and overall it was an excellent panel.

Then we headed out to dinner and I had the best best meal of Wiscon, a lamb and goat cheese sandwhich with pickled veggies. WOW. So yummy.

Came back and went to Livejournal and Wiscon and then Sherlock Dracula before heading briefly up to the parties before passing out.

Wiscon was entirely awesome and I had a lot of fun. I also managed to avoid the WisCholera, at least so far, so all is good, and in fact I feel pretty damn healthy.

There will be more posts later, but first, since I talked to a bunch of different people about it, here's a link to me ice diving. I promise there will be con reportage and meta later.

Wiscon Day 2

How people have time to blog at Wiscon, I will never know. I go home, and I'm still strapped for time! Anyway, I've meet like a dozen people I need to go out and friend now. I'll have to start writing down their lj names because I manage to forget by the time I'm in front of a computer, and some of them I didn't catch names or lj names, like the people I just stopped talking to in the lobby of the hotel.

Tomorrow I will get up in time for the CS Lewis vs. Pullman smack down.

If you haven't seen, voting for the lj advisory bored is going on. At least two fannish people are running rm and legomymalfoy, and you should have gotten an email with everyone who is running.

I not encouraging or discouraging voting, I'm just saying it's going on, because I would have missed it with the hubbub of Wiscon if I hadn't seen it on the flist.

It's been a bit crazy around her. On Friday we went to see Jonathan Coulton, then hightailed it out to Indianapolis for my cousins' First Communion and Baptism. We're back now, but I'm still a little crazy trying to juggle everything. I applied to UW as a Special Student, so that I can take Art History classes this summer, and am waiting to hear back. I'm also taking a stained glass class and a book binding class.

We lifted tonight and went up in weights and my arms are already sore, it's possible I over did it.

It's over...

I survived IDC (and passed with flying colors). Eight twelve hour days with two days of open water diving in a freakin' wet suit in 42 degree water plus four days in the pool. But it's over. Now I just have to live through IE (the Instructor Exam) and I'll be an official Open Water Instructor.

However, I am so not getting my Master Scuba Diver Trainer (let's you teach specialty courses like ice diving and cavern diving) in June, I need a break. It was no where near as bad as Scientific diving (which was four months in the pool followed up with a week of tests and two weeks of open water in the quarry, the ocean, and in a channel), but I still have no finger tips left and my brain is mush.

This is quiet possibly why, when I woke up from the dream I was having I thought, wow, that was a dream in Five things format, so weird. I think it was from my week of fanfic withdrawal. Feel free to point me to anything I need to catch up on.

Happy Pesach! We broke early tonight so peoples could do do Passover things, which was nice because eleven straight hours of IDC made me want to shoot myself in the head. Eight more days of scuba boot camp left to go.

Also, I'm going to be scare this week, but I am going to track down all the comments I missed because either lj or gmail was being dumb again. Argh.

Oh peoples... I think I need to go to bed and cry now. Anjali Pai, who I went to high school with died yesterday in a car crash. She was into Harry Potter and our fannish interests never really overlapped, but some of you might have known her as anjenue or cherrypai. My best memory of her is from our senior year when she and the theater group did Rent in Mac Cafe. I saw Rent on it's original tour, but there was something amazing and just so moving about Rent put on in our dorm's common room with just the most basic of costumes and props. It's one of my most cherished memories of high school.

blackwylf, eviltiffy, I don't know if either of you knew her, but someone's set up a comm to leave condolences at if you did: we_love_you_anj

Today, seriously?

I came home today to a rejection letter from A&M (dude, who the fuck sends out rejection letters on April Fools?). Life sucks, people. I really, really though I'd get in and this really just makes me want to kick things or eat chocolate and wallow, even though I had already decided not to go if I was accepted. Links of cheeriness would be appreciated.
